Almost every first meeting goes the same way. A founder pushes a sheet of paper across the table with a name on it, sometimes three. They have lived with it for months. It’s in the business plan, the family has approved it, and somebody’s cousin has already made a logo.
Then we run the checks. The .com is parked. A company in Surat filed it under Class 35 four years ago. And in Dubai, where a good share of their buyers sit, it sounds a bit too close to a word you wouldn’t want printed on a box.
That’s really what a brand naming agency in Ahmedabad, or anywhere, is for. Coming up with clever words is the easy part. Finding a name you can actually own is the work.
SmartFish has been naming, designing and launching brands from Vastrapur since 2007, more than 750 of them across India, Dubai and Europe. Naming is the part of that work we enjoy the most, and also the part we argue about the most inside the studio.
The name that describes too well. “Gujarat Steel Tubes” tells people exactly what you do. That’s the problem. You can’t own common words, so you can’t stop the next steel tube company from using something nearly identical.
The name borrowed from a trend. A few years ago everything ended in -ify. Then -ora, then -verse. These names feel modern for about eighteen months and then feel like everyone else.
The name that only works in one language. A name can sound lovely in Gujarati and awkward in Arabic. If you plan to sell beyond one market, someone needs to say it out loud in each of them before you print anything.
The name picked by committee. When ten people need to approve a name, the safest one wins. Safe names are forgettable names.
We don’t open a notebook and start listing words. A brand naming strategy comes first, and the names come out of it.

Before we meet properly, you get a questionnaire from us. It asks the things founders rarely get asked out loud. Who buys from you, and where? What should the brand never sound like? Which competitor names annoy you, and why? Is this a product name, a company name, or both? Will it stay in Gujarat, or might it be on a shelf in Warsaw in five years?
Your answers become the naming brief. A name for a pharma company and a name for a waffle café need very different things, and the questionnaire is where that difference first shows up.
Names fall into families: coined words, compounds, borrowed words, metaphors, and familiar words with a twisted spelling. We decide which territories suit the brand and drop the ones that don’t. Since you’ll probably ask, our own leaning is towards the unexpected: two words that shouldn’t sit together, or a familiar word spelled just slightly wrong. Those are the names people remember after hearing them once.
Every name is written by hand, by people, around a table and in notebooks. We don’t use AI at this stage, on purpose. Generated names tend to come from the same patterns, which is how so many brands end up sounding alike. The long list runs into the hundreds. Most die inside the studio, usually within a minute of being said out loud, and you will never see them.
Every name that survives gets checked in-house:
Here is where we do use AI, as a second pair of eyes. Once the shortlist is ready, we run it through AI tools to double-check meanings in other languages, spot unfortunate associations and look for near-matches we might have missed. AI checks the names. It doesn’t create them.
Each name comes with the thinking behind it, what it can grow into, and where it might run into trouble. We would rather show you six names we can defend than fifty you have to sort through.
Our trademark check is a first filter, not legal clearance. Once you have a favourite, we introduce you to a trademark attorney we work with and stay in the conversation between you and them. That way the full search, the filing and any objections are handled properly, and nothing gets lost between the creative side and the legal side.
If you searched for brand name suggestions, you have probably already tried a name generator or asked ChatGPT. It’s quick, and it’s free.
The trouble is what comes after. A generator gives you two hundred brand name suggestions in ten seconds, and they all come from the same patterns everyone else’s list came from. It can’t tell you that number 47 is already registered in your class, that number 112 means something rude in Hindi, or that none of them say anything about why your product is better. That’s why our names are written by people and only checked with AI, never the other way round.

A lot of what we name doesn’t stay in one city. We have worked with clients in Dubai for years, and we run European operations in partnership with dotnpixel. So when a name is headed for the Gulf, we check how it sounds and reads to Arabic speakers. When it is going to Europe, we make sure people there can say it without a pronunciation guide. These checks are cheap to do before launch and very expensive to skip.
A name on its own is half a brand. Once the name is locked, the same team can take it into [logo design], [brand identity], [packaging design] and your [website]. Because it stays with one team, the thinking behind the name carries straight through to how the brand looks.
It builds a naming strategy, creates name options, and screens them for trademark, domain and language problems before you pick one. The goal is a name you can legally own and use in every market you plan to enter.
No. Every name is written by our team by hand. We use AI only after the shortlist exists, to double-check meanings, associations and near-matches.
No, and you should be wary of anyone who says they can. The Trademark Registry decides registration. We run an initial trademark search in-house to filter out obvious conflicts, then introduce you to a trademark attorney who does the full search and the filing. We stay involved between you and the attorney throughout.
It depends on what you sell. Clothing falls under Class 25, food items like tea, coffee, bakery and spices under Class 30, pharmaceuticals under Class 5, software and IT services under Class 42, and retail and advertising services under Class 35. Many brands need more than one class. We flag the likely classes during screening, and the attorney confirms them.
Yes. Renaming takes more care than naming from scratch, because there are existing customers, listings and paperwork to think about. We plan the change along with the new name.
We don’t send out random lists, because an unscreened name can do more harm than good. If you already have names you are considering, bring them to the first conversation and we’ll tell you honestly how they hold up.
It depends on the scope. One product name is a different job from naming a company with three sub-brands across two countries. We give you a clear scope once we understand the brief.
